Beyond Individualism

OVERVIEW

Europe’s Christian heritage has brought great benefit, providing the basis for freedoms, values and a cohesive sense of identity. But all that has been under attack in recent decades, not least from the culture of individualism. Yet now that ‘individualism’ is itself being challenged. There is renewed interest in ‘Civil Society’ and finding a better framework for healthy community. But is that possible without a Christian framework?

How can we best communicate the unique resources of Christian social thinking in this new context and how can we encourage a new era of positive, robust Christian political engagement?

Join us for a special event in the heart of London as we consider the opportunities and challenges.

Speakers include:

  • Phillip Blond, Director, Res Publica (UK)
  • Lord Glasman, Reader in Political Theory, London Metropolitan University (UK)
  • Os Guinness, Author and Social Critic
  • Franck Margain, Vice-President, Parti Chrétien Démocrate (France)
  • Eimert van Middelkoop, former Minister of Defence (The Netherlands)
  • Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, President OXTRAD (UK)

COLLOQUIUM - FRIDAY 25TH NOVEMBER

This special colloquium is open to all but aimed particularly at leaders in politics, policy, advocacy and academia.

  • Influential thinkers and social commentators, Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, Lord Glasman and Phillip Blond will help us examine the connections between Christianity, civil society and political engagement.
  • After lunch, Franck Margain (Vice-President, Parti Chrétien Démocrate) will outline the challenges and opportunities facing Christian political activity across Europe.
  • During the second part of the afternoon, practitioners, activists, politicians and thinkers will contribute to an extended, moderated debate as to how Christian political engagement can be strengthened and extended across Europe.

Join us for what promises to be a stretching but energising day. Book now to take advantage of generously subsidised rates.

CONFERENCE - SATURDAY 26TH NOVEMBER

11am – 4.30pm; Quadrant House, 10 Fleet Street, London

Our Saturday conference provides an opportunity to take a step back and consider the big issues facing Europe and what can be done. Our speakers will help us consider the freedoms that Europe has enjoyed, the future that Europe faces and the framework Europe needs if she is to prosper and develop. We’ll then have opportunity to question a panel of experts as we seek to identify concrete ways forward in the quest to bolster Christian political engagement across the continent.

Speakers include:

  • Os Guinness (Author and Social Critic)
  • Eimert van Middelkoop (former Minister of Defence, The Netherlands)
  • Andrea Williams (Chief Executive, Christian Concern / Christian Legal Centre).

We hope to provide an opportunity for delegates from continental Europe to tour Parliament before the conference begins. The Christian Peoples Alliance will hold its AGM during this time. Conference delegates are welcome to observe.

The conference will complement the previous day’s colloquium but attendance on the Friday is not necessary to benefit from the event.

Book now to take advantage of a limited number of generously subsidised places.
